It was origially a house back in the 1930s, then someone converted it to the downstairs grocery store, upstairs apt. My folks bought it on contract after my dad lost his Bursley wholesale grocery sales job in the Great Depression. The house to the east was where W9UDD lived (Fritz Haneline), from whom I learned about electronics, spending hours in his basement workshop/ham station when not needed in the store.b0340-Back yard of 509 E. State. My warm-weather workshop was in the back of the garage (thru side door next to two windows). The workshop was partitioned off from the front garage. I built a makeshift electric opener for the overhead door using a bike chain laid flat in a wood channel. Driven by a 1/4 horse motor. Kinda worked. Winter workshop was behind the meat counter in the store! Goodness, what was considered food-safety-acceptable back then!b0334-Pic of the apartment I grew up in at 509 E. State St. in Ft. Wayne, as we were clearing out the accumulation of a lifetime, after my mother died (Grandma Katharine Baker). We transported a few things back to W.L., but gave most of the stuff away, just before the building was torn down to sell the land to Hefner Chevrolet.. This was the Living Room, with the cot that I slept on while I was growing up.b0335-pic of the apartment I grew up in, as we were clearing out the accumulation of a lifetime, after my mother died (Grandma Katharine Baker).b0343A-Chris posing with the semi “2×4 Toys” that we made in the basement and sold for several years at craft shows.0344A Kathy Trivia: This appears to be the concrete version of the pond and our last (futile) attempt to make something that would hold water! b0345-Front L-R: Pete (standing), Steve, Chris, Jenny (holding Kathy), Peg Back L-R: Jerry, Dad, Mike.
